2006 HUMMER H2 Review

The EPA doesn't estimate fuel economy for vehicles above the 8600 lb GVWR threshold (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - the maximum recommended weight for a vehicle, including the weight of the vehicle itself, fuel and other fluids, passengers, and all cargo), so neither does HUMMER. During my week in the H2, I got 8.6 mpg. More optimistic estimates go as high as 12.4 mpg -- still incredibly thirsty. Your mileage, as they say, may vary, but don't stray too far from the pump.

If you're considering an H2, wow. According to GM, your median income is around $167,500. You're 78% married, you're 73% male, you're 81% white and your median age is 44.

There are other off-road capable large luxury SUVs on the road for your consideration. The Range Rover and the Toyota Land Cruiser both have international reputations, great off-road chops, and high levels of refinement inside and out. Infiniti's QX 56 and Lexus' GX 470 are heavy on the luxury, but can keep up when the pavement ends. Don't overlook the Lincoln Navigator and GM's own Cadillac Escalade for over-the-top American luxury and reasonable off-road ability.

If you've been bitten by the HUMMER bug, your only cure may be the H2. I''m fighting off a bad case of H2 fever right now -- wish me luck.
