This 1937 Seagrave Safety Sedan Pumper is owned by the Detroit Firemen's Benevolent Fund, a charitable organization that provides aid to disabled firefighters and their families. The fire truck is being restored, primarily for use as a memorial hearse when a Michigan firefighter dies in the line of duty.
Fire equipment has traditionally been used to carry fallen firefighters to their final resting place, but stricter regulations are making it difficult for the tradition to continue. The vintage truck is being built to meet the guidelines. Its low floor offers easy access, and the truck will be fitted so that pallbearers can ride inside, where they are protected from the weather. Using the vintage truck will enable a community's fire trucks to remain in service during a funeral.
Members of the Fund have worked on the truck and raised funds for repairs, and Michigan companies and residents have donated time, materials and money to the project.
