Chevy Avalanche keeps the same basic looks for 2009, but head out to dealer lots and you'll find updates to its trim, plus changes inside and under the hood, like a new 6-speed transmission with two overdrive gears that enhance fuel economy by letting the engine run at lower rpms. In another fuel-saving effort, Chevy gave Avalanche a 5.3L V-8 engine equipped with Active Fuel Management. It's standard on the 2009 pickups, and switches the engine from 8-cylinder to 4-cylinder operation when extra power isn't necessary.
