Seat Belt Pretensioner

By Dale Wickell, About.com

Definition: A seat belt pretensioner is built into a vehicle's seat belt mechanism. If an accident occurs, the pretensioner pulls the seat belt slightly tighter to minimize injury that can occur if the seat belt is too loose.

This action is separate, but simultaneous, to the locking up of the seat belt retractor.
