Comparing Electronic Vehicle Stability Control Systems

Electronic vehicle stability control systems help drivers maintain control when a vehicle starts to skid, slide or spin. For this road test, we drove a truck to about 50 mph and then turned the wheel as if we were trying to avoid another vehicle -- without pushing on the brakes.

Each truck's vehicle stability control system kicked, activating the brakes and assisting the steering to help keep the vehicle on the road.

I drove a 4WD Chevy Silverado and 4WD Toyota Tundra on this portion of the track. We tested the trucks in 2WD mode -- putting a Tundra in 4WD disables its stability control system. The Toyota's ABS brake system makes an annoying chime sound when it's activated, but overall both vehicles performed well.
