Vintage Truck Value Guide

Growing up in the midwestern US during the 1960's, the pickup trucks I remember were either farm trucks or trucks used to get people to and from work. They were mostly 2-wheel drive vehicles with six-cylinder or small V8 engines and 3-speed transmissions. Typical amenities included metal door panels, vinyl bench seats, an optional heater, hand-crank windows, and an AM radio. Remember those days?

Some manufacturers still build those basic trucks, but just try to find one on a dealer's lot. Nearly everything in-stock has V6 or V8 Fuel Injected power, an automatic transmission, air conditioning, nice cloth or leather seats, a minimum of an AM-FM radio system, full power, and cruise control--all the extras available in a car.

Cadillac Escalade EXT
A hybrid with features of both a luxury car and a truck.

  • Standard equipment includes a 345-hp V8, automatic transmission, air, power steering, power door locks, heated leather power seats, traction control, on star satellite system, keyless entry, and all wheel drive.

  • Put passengers in the rear seats, or flip the seats forward and remove a panel to quickly expand the cargo area from five to eight feet.

  • Even the heated outside mirrors are programmable, and include a curb view feature that tilts to show the ground when you're backing up.

  • All the features of a luxury car with a $49,990 base price.

Ford SVT Lightning
If speed and handling are more your thing.

  • It comes standard with a 380 HP V8, sport handling suspension, heavy duty antilock brakes, low profile unidirectional tires, and aero styling.

  • It looks like a truck, but it drives like a sports car. The base price is $32490.

Today's world of trucks offers just about any option you might be looking for: trucks with 2-doors, 3-doors, and 4-doors; compact, midsize, and full size models; 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, and all wheel drive; and everything from 4 to even 10 cylinder engines, gas or diesel. Whatever you might be looking for is out there if you're willing to search for it and pay the price.
