As the trucks' popularity grows, so do the available factory options. A couple of updates have been critical -- Raptor's engine is larger and more powerful than in the beginning (6.2 liter V8, 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft of torque). Raptor is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode, and its 4WD transfer case features shift-on-the-fly capability.
Since 2011, the Raptor truck has been available in a SuperCrew configuration as well as the original SuperCab.
Other tweaks to the Raptor have included:
- a grille-mounted camera in 2012 to improve the driver's visibility when climbing over obstacles
- addition of a Torsen® limited-slip differential to help balance traction between the front wheels, also in 2012
- beadlock-capable wheels in 2013 help improve grip when driving in low-traction conditions
- also for 2013, high-intensity headlamps for improved visibility, and SYNC® with MyFordTouch® for extra connectivity
Constant evolution is one reason Raptor sales continue to climb, but hold on -- there's absolutely nothing negative about the original truck, so if you can find a used version don't hesitate to grab it, and if you own a previous model, either hang on or trade up. But if you're among the many buyers who have an interest in the latest model, something that's unique, hold off on a decision until you learn more about Ford's newest Raptor, a Special Edition truck built for the 2014 model year.
What We Know About the 2014 Ford SVT Raptor Special Edition PackageThe 2014 Ford SVT Raptor Special Edition truck includes all the normal features of the Luxury Package, but adds Ruby Red Metallic or Tuxedo Black exterior paint with special bedside graphics, brick red seat bolsters with black inserts and a special center stack, door panel and console appliques.
The Raptor truck's suspension, driveline and on/off-road abilities are top of the line in a production vehicle, but they're capabilities that aren't readily visible. The special edition truck takes care of that by adding special graphics and dressing up the Raptor in way that commands even more attention. The truck will be available in the fall of 2013.

If 411 horsepower isn't quite enough, turn your Raptor truck over to Shelby American for awhile. They'll send it back as a Shelby Raptor. Get in line, because the company's phones have been ringing since introducing their conversion truck at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
