You'll find two different 'grades' of trucks when you shop for a 2012 Toyota Tundra, the Tundra grade and the higher-end Limited. Three cab styles are still available, a Regular (no rear seating), Double Cab (rear seating) and a CrewMax (more spacious rear seats and legroom).

Bed lengths remain the same, long to short, and availability depends on the body style you choose (CrewMax is hooked up to the shortest bed, measuring 66.7 inches in length).

Tundra Engines and Transmissions

The 2012 truck offers the same engine and transmission choices as last year's Tundra pickup:

  • The base engine is a 4.0 liter V6 (270 horsepower and 278 pound feet of torque) and comes standard with a 5 speed automatic transmission. Some buyers think that a full size truck should house a V8 engine, but don't underestimate this V6. It has enough power to haul the truck and a 1,450 pound payload, or tow a 4,500 pound trailer. Fuel usage is rated at 16 mpg city and 20 mpg on the highway. This engine is not available on four wheel drive Tundra trucks.

  • Next up is the 4.6 liter V8 engine (310 horsepower 327 pound feet of torque), which can only be combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel mileage use is rated at 15 city and 20 highway for 2WD trucks and 14 city vs. 19 highway for 4WD models.

  • Topping the engine line-up is a 5.7 liter V8. It too is available only with the 6-speed automatic transmission. This V8 produces 381 horsepower and 401 pound feet of torque and can tow up to 10,400 pounds. As you'd expect, fuel mileage ratings drop to 14 city and 18 highway for 2WD models and 13 city vs. 17 highway for 4WD trucks.

    Either of the V8 engines can be installed in 4WD trucks.

I understand the need for a V6 engine -- and the reasons why some people will chose that setup. I don't understand the need to offer the 4.6 V8. There's nothing wrong with the engine, but it makes more sense to me to offer the 5.7 liter as the only V8 choice. It has 71 more horsepower, 74 more pound feet of torque, fuel mileage ratings are very close and I would think that doing away with the 4.6 would mean that the price of the 5.7 upgrade would be reduced. Just my personal opinion.
