Toyota introduced its Tacoma pickup truck to buyers in the U.S. in 1995, and since then, the truck has continued to grow in popularity.
Tacoma PreRunners were originally used to check out an off-road course before a race. The trucks had a sporty look and feel and they sat higher than a typical Tacoma, but were never 4x4s. Toyota eventually decided to offer PreRunners as production trucks, keeping the higher ground clearance and sporty look (along with a beefed-up suspension and larger brakes borrowed from 4x4 Tacomas). The result is a pickup that's more affordable and more fuel efficient than a 4x4, but with some of the features that make a 4x4 appealing.
