2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Review & Test Drive

From Colin Hefferon

On the Road in the the Dodge Ram Mega Cab

The 1500 and 2500 Mega Cab models come standard with Chrysler Group's new 345hp, 5.7 litre HEMI V-8 with five-speed automatic transmission. The HEMI's multi displacement system (MDS) is standard too. MDS is a computer-controlled system that cuts off four of the cylinders in light load situations like stop-and-go traffic and highway cruising at steady speeds. The change from 8 to 4 cylinder and back is instantaneous, seamless and (typically) undetectable.

A potent 5.9 litre Cummins Turbo Diesel is an expensive (but very much recommended) option. The Cummins is available with 6-speed manual or 4-speed auto.

Both the HEMI and the Cummins engines performed brilliantly on the 1500 and 2500 Mega Cab models we tested – great acceleration, great passing capability and hill climbing. Not unexpectedly given the size of this vehicle, the Cummins with its humungous torque – a stump-pulling 610 lb-ft - was the more rewarding to drive. If you plan to keep your vehicle a while or if you have to put a lot of miles on it, the Cummins is the engine for you. Not only will you save on fuel costs but depreciation also promises to be significantly slower. Against this, of course, you have to weigh its not inconsiderable additional upfront cost.
