2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Review & Test Drive

From Colin Hefferon

2 of 5

First Glance at the Dodge Ram Mega Cab

Although it features a brand new frame, new suspension and new body mounts, the Mega Cab is immediately recognizable as a Dodge Ram. The starting point for the Mega Cab is the Ram 2500 long box. The body has been lengthened by 20" and the pickup box shortened by 20”. Those twenty inches of space have been filled with two full-size doors with full size rear seats and folding seatbacks. When you see the Quad Cab and the Mega Cab side-by-side, you’ll notice a considerable difference in the size of the cabs particularly from the B-pillar aft. The Mega Cab’s rear doors are 10 inches longer than the Quad's.

From a front view the easiest way to tell '06 models from the '05 is by checking out the Ram insignia. On the '05, it’s mounted on the hood; while on the '06 it’s been moved south and now resides mid-grill.

The standard wheels and tires barely register in the huge trapezoidal wheel wells. Which gives the Mega Cab a gawky kid-in-flood-pants look. It shouldn’t be allowed off the showroom floor without bigger wheels and tires.

The Ram Mega Cab is available in 1500, 2500 and 3500 (dually) models. All are built on the Ram heavy-duty platform. Two trim levels – SLT and Laramie – are available with all three models.
