On the Road in the H2

Driving the H2 is a lot like driving a truck -- heck, it is a truck. As one of the widest SUVs on the road (81.2"), the H2 demands your attention in every on-road situation. It would be way too easy to crowd fellow motorists to the shoulder or to take out a mailbox and some shrubbery. The H2's high stance gives you a commanding view of the road, and visibility all around is pretty good -- way better than in the H3, actually.

Under the hood of the H2 lives a 6 liter V8 that generates 325 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The H2 weighs in at an astounding 6,400 lbs -- that's over three tons! Power is more than adequate, though the H2 is not fleet of foot by any means. It does deliver a smooth, controlled ride on the road, with a minimum of body roll, but good steering feel.

The H2 is famous for its off-road capability. My test H2 was equipped with a $1,275 Air Suspension package, which can raise ground clearance from 9.9" to 10.8" and approach, departure and breakover angles to astounding levels. The H2's undercarriage is well-protected with factory installed skid plates. With electronically locking rear differentials, traction control and 4-wheel drive, the H2 would be quite an expensive, luxurious way to explore your off-pavement fantasies.
