You might like the Access Cab version of the of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma, a cross between a regular cab with no rear seating at all and a Double Cab with two full rows of seats. The Access Cab -- called an extended cab by most auto manufacturers -- has rear-opening back doors that lead to jump seats, handy when you need short-distance seating for extra passengers, but not designed for comfort during long trips.
The 4x4 Access Cab sits higher than a two-wheel drive truck, but the compact Tacoma isn't so tall that shorter-legged passengers can't climb in easily. Optional side steps would make entry more comfortable.
The Tacoma's composite bed is new for this generation of the truck, which was totally redesigned in 2005. There's no need for a bedliner, because the bed will stand up to pretty much anything you want to throw inside.
