Comparing the Torrent to a Vega may be unfair – okay, it's downright unfair. The Vega was a massive disaster, and the Torrent is just a little leak under the sink. GM's 3400 V6 is a proven commodity, and should provide great reliability in the Torrent as it does across the GM product line. At 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway according to EPA estimates, the Torrent is right in the middle of the pack as far as fuel economy goes. Without the options, the Torrent is also competitively priced. Don't economize on side-impact and head curtain airbags, though. Add them first, before you consider any other options.

You'll want to drive the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Jeep Liberty and Kia Sorento before you buy a Torrent. Don't overlook the Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Tucson before you make up your mind, either. Check out the Saturn Vue as well. If you have any thoughts of taking your SUV off-road, you'll want to look at the all-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive versions, and then you ought to have your head examined. The Torrent is an on-road vehicle, even with AWD.

In the years since my father brought that Vega home, I've come to terms with his fallibility. Be sure you're ready for the look in your child's eyes if you choose to bring home a Torrent.
