A new permanent 4WD system is standard. Under ideal road conditions torque distribution is 50% front and 50% rear. A four-wheel adaptation of the company's electronic traction control is used to maintain stability and traction on wet or snowy roads. The system senses wheel slip electronically and brakes the slipping wheels. This transfers torque to those tires with the most grip. There is no axle binding in tight steering situations, which the driver would experience as sluggish steering response and vibration.

Two engines are available. Both are made in Germany and both meet the rigorous US criteria for super ultra low emission vehicles (SULEV). First is a new 24valve 3.5L V-6 pumping out 268hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The same engine is also found in the sleek new SLK 350 sports coupe. It takes the ML 350 from 0 - 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.

The top line powerplant is a 3-valve per cylinder 5.0L V-8 producing 302hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. It's identical to the engine in the SL 500 sports coupe. It takes the ML 500 from 0 - 60mph in 6.9 seconds.

The M-Class is loaded with performance features, eg, an optional computer-directed air suspension. The computer selects the best ride quality and height based on road conditions.
