In the Driver’s Seat of the Subaru Forester XT

You enter upright and sit tall in the Forester. Yet it is not a high vehicle – at least not when compared with, say, the Ford Explorer. Access to all five seats is remarkably smooth. Because the driver can easily see all four corners of the vehicle, the Forester promises to be easy-as-pie to park. Actually, a good part of the credit for this is because of its compact size. Overhang is virtually non-existent.

This year, the Forester features standard front air bags and side air bags. But no curtain air bags. Subaru’s engineers claim they are not really necessary since the side air bags come up to the average person’s ear level when inflated. Apparently, they offer almost as much head protection in a crash as do the curtain airbags.

The Forester is an all-weather, all-road vehicle. It is one of the best-engineered, most capable vehicles available. All Foresters – indeed all Subarus sold in North America – are equipped with the legendary Subaru symmetrical full time all wheel drive. With this system, torque is sent to all four wheels at once. This makes the wheels track better and at normal highway speeds, it tends to cancel out both oversteer and understeer.

A biggest-in-the-industry sunroof makes for great al fresco cruising.
