2006 Subaru Forester XT Test Drive and Review

First Glance at the 2006 Subaru Forester XT

Even though the 2006 Forester is completely new from the A-pillar (windshield) forward, it somehow manages to look very familiar. Perhaps it’s the turbo air scoop, which has been carried over from previous turbo models. Though tasteless to my middle-aged eyes, it’s quite functional and is required to supply fresh air to the intercooler.

Only if you put the ’05 side-by-side with the 2006 will normal folks be able to discern the differences. The most obvious difference is the new grill. It’s much less cluttered than the previous generation. The four-lamp headlights are different as well. On the turbo model, which we tested for this article, xenon high intensity discharge bulbs are standard (and necessary). Surprisingly there are no headlight washers.

The familiar tall windows have been made even taller for ’06. This allows exceptional sight lines and very generous headroom.

The Forester is one of those wonderful vehicles – alas, most are Japanese in origin – that has a compact body with a very roomy interior. Four people can easily be accommodated; five, if three are prepared to share the rear bench. Speaking of which, the comfortable rear seats can be folded flat with little fuss if large objects have to be carried.
