First Glance at the Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4X4
Ford has spruced up the Explorer for 2006, with several subtle changes that have done a nice job of keeping the venerable SUV looking crisp and modern. The front grille and fascia now match the new F-series trucks, with lots of chrome and two prominent nostrils. Given that the Ford F-series trucks are the best-selling vehicles in the US, bringing the Explorer closer to the truck aesthetic is probably a good idea. New taillights and a redesigned liftgate also work well. The functional flip-up rear glass aligns with the body's shoulders, giving the Explorer a complete waist line. You can easily imagine the F-150 and the Explorer coming from the same mold, though they share few body parts in common. The Eddie Bauer version of the Explorer features an "Eddie Bauer" badge on the exterior, two-tone paint, running boards and 17" painted aluminum wheels. My test vehicle was equipped with 18" chromed wheels, a $595 option. Paint quality is excellent, but I was disappointed in the fit of the body parts. I'm picky, but I like even seams and gaps for my $43,000.
If you've got to have an SUV, the Explorer is a tastefully designed one that doesn't go over the top to emphasize its size. You can glide through town without drawing too many stares.
