Heads up, Detroit! Having already eaten a large part of your lunch, Honda now wants your dinner too. With the new-for-2006 Ridgeline truck, Honda follows Nissan and Toyota into the large pick-up market - one formerly owned by Detroit. The Ridgeline comes in a 4-door crew cab configuration only. From some angles, it looks uncomfortably like the monstrous Chevrolet Avalanche. But thankfully, that impression soon dissipates.

The Honda people did a complete rethink of the traditional pick up's cargo area. First they observed how people actually use their vehicles. They found people carry stuff around that they might not want to leave exposed to the elements or to the prying eyes and grubby fingers of thieves. A lockable trunk with a volume of 8.5 cubic ft was built in under the cargo bed. There's plenty enough room in there for two or three soft sided overnight bags or even a couple of sets of golf clubs. Wide and flat with vestigial wheel wells that barely intrude, the cargo bed itself is exceptionally useful. You can carry 1100 lbs back there.

The Ridgeline is just over 70 inches high without the optional (and redundant) roof racks. Towing capacity is 5,000 lbs.
