Toyota has beefed up its 4.7L V8 engine and is offering a new 4.0-liter V6 on 2005 Tundra pickup trucks. V8 models have a new standard five-speed automatic transmission, and Double Cab models are now available with curtain and seat side airbags.

Engine Highlights

  • New 4.0-liter V6 produces 245 horsepower and 282 lb-ft. of torque, about a 30-percent increas over previous models.

  • V8 gains variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), upping horsepower from 240 to 282. Torque has increased by 10 lb-ft. to 325 lb-ft.

  • Both engines feature a new electronic throttle control system with intelligence (ETCS-i) to help optimize performance and fuel economy.

  • Both engines run on regular-grade gasoline.

Tundra Manual Transmission

A new six-speed manual transmission replaces the five-speed manual in V6 Tundras. A five-speed automatic is optional.

Model Changes

  • 4WD Tundra V6 Access Cab models are no longer offered.

  • There's a new 2WD regular cab V8 with a bench seat, color-keyed grille, chrome bumper and AM/FM CD stereo with four speakers.

  • Double Cabs are now available with a 60/40 split front bench seat.

Body Alterations

  • Headlights and taillights have been redesigned.

On the Inside

  • The Tundra's instrument gauge panel has been redesigned.

  • An optional navigation system is available on Access Cab Ltd. and Double Cab trucks.

  • Rear seat passengers have their own heat and AC ducts.

  • A rear seat audio and DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones is available on Double Cabs.

  • The rear 60/40 seat folds and tumbles to allow cargo.

Payload and Towing

  • Payload ranges up to 2,025 pounds (varies by model)

  • Most V8 Tundras can tow up to 7,100 pounds

  • A Towing Package is available on all V8 Tundra trucks:
    • Class IV tow hitch
    • Seven-pin connector with converter
    • 130-amp alternator
    • Supplemental transmission oil cooler

4WD and Offroad

  • The Tundra's Touch Select system has dash-mounted buttons to switch the electronically controlled transfer case between 2WD, 4WD "high" and 4WD "low" modes.

  • An optional Off-Road Package is available for V8 Double Cabs and Access Cabs.

SR5 Trucks

  • color-keyed front bumper and grille with chrome accents
  • chrome rear bumper
  • color-keyed overfenders with integrated and contoured mudguards
  • air conditioning
  • cruise control (with V6 SR5 Extra Value Package)
  • variable intermittent windshield wipers
  • tilt steering wheel
  • captain's chair front seats are standard with V6 manual-transmission trucks and optional on other SR5s

Limited Trucks add:

  • color-keyed exterior trim
  • fog lamps
  • enhanced JBL audio system with eight speakers on Double Cab Limiteds
  • quarter and power-sliding rear windows with privacy glass
  • remote keyless entry and an anti-theft system

More Options

  • Leather trim package and captain's chair front seats with power-adjustable driver's seat and optional seat heaters on Double Cab trucks.
  • Super Sport Shell developed for the Double Cab by SNUGTOP.
