Toyota's RAV4 SUV got a larger, more powerful engine in 2004, plus a new exterior, safety improvements and interior upgrades, so the visible alterations for 2005 are more enhancements than they are actual changes.
Here's what you'll see on the 2005 RAV4.
All 2005 Toyota SUVs come standard with the automaker's Star Safety System:
- Anti-lock brake system (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking up, allowing you to maintain steering control.
- Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) senses weight distribution during braking and maximizes braking force where needed. It's especially helpful during cornering.
- The Brake Assist safety system is designed to increase brake pedal force under hard, but not severe, braking conditions--up to the point when the ABS kicks in.
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system monitors wheel slippage during cornering and controls engine torque and individual wheel-braking to help maintain stability.
- Traction control (TRAC) monitors wheel slippage during acceleration and uses the braking system to help maintain traction.

Good Fuel Mileage
The RAV4 continues to offer excellent fuel mileage for its class:
- 4WD with automatic transmission, 22 city / 27 highway
- 2WD model with five-speed manual transmission, 24 city/ 30 highway
- Other models fall in-between those figures
RAV4 Engine
- 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 161 hp and 165 lb.-ft. of peak torque.
- Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps boost torque at low- and mid-range engine speeds.
Suspension
The RAV4 has an independent suspension system consisting of MacPherson struts on the front and double wishbones in the rear. This combination allows a car-like ride, but helps give the vehicle a sporty feel.
Drivetrain
You can choose a front-wheel drive or 4WD RAV4 with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
