Journey's End

The Nissan Titan was designed to take direct aim at the venerable Ford F-150, make no bones about it. Ford has owned the top position in the half-ton truck world for many years, and Nissan would love to get a big chunk of that market.

Over the past few years, pickup trucks have grown in popularity as everyday rides. Many trucks never haul a load or tow a trailer, making amenities and styling more important than ever. If you need a truck for work, take a hard look at the numbers. Measure the Titan against the F-150, Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra. The competitors have tons of options and setups, but you'll find that the Titan delivers the most standard horsepower and torque for the money. Styling is a matter of taste. To my eye, the F-150 is still the best-looking of the bunch, with the Titan a close second. Utility is also in the eye of the beholder, it all depends what you need your truck to do.

With the current rise of fuel prices, the days of the full-size pickup-as-fashion statement may be behind us. The Nissan Titan 4X4 SE has a lot of merits, but if you're not going to use it as a truck, you'll curse yourself every time you fill that 28 gallon tank. At 18 mpg, expect a ginormous amount of cursing.

Guide Notes

Thanks to Jason for his review of the Titan. I'd give this one a 4.5-star mark. Like most full-size trucks it's not a gas saver, but if you need one... you need one. For many people utility is the key, not gas consumption. -Dale
