2005 Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra is a rarity nowadays. It's a unique vehicle, one without a true direct comparison from another manufacturer. Other mid-size six-cylinder SUVs include the Ford Escape, the Hyundai Tucson, the Jeep Liberty and the Saturn Vue, all of which offer more car-like amenities than the Xterra without the rugged appearance. For other rugged looking vehicles in the price range, you can look at the Jeep Wrangler, the Land Rover Freelander or the Hummer H3.

If you're considering an Xterra because you're a genuine outdoors person, you're probably going to want to consider the four-wheel drive models. The Xterra is offered in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, including a special "Off-Road" model that has a beefed up suspension, engine and fuel tank skid plates and other enhancements.

If you're intent on getting an Xterra, be sure that it matches your needs. Take a close look at that back door – your passengers will definitely comment on it every time they have to get in and out.

The merits of the Xterra are many, and there's something to be said for rugged looks, truck heritage and refined road manners. It may not have "nothing you don't" need anymore, but the Xterra is a unique vehicle that's worth a look.
