Inside the Sportage offers more room, more standard features, and more quality than the previous model. Gordon Dickie, formerly of Mazda Research and Development (R&D), is in now charge of quality at Kia. Because quality is so important to a vehicle’s image, Dickie has really made a big difference and will continue to do so for future Kia models.

Kia’s new tag line is "the power to surprise," and I was actually surprised that the Sportage could offer so much for so little cash. Unexpected niceties like the drop-and-fold second-row seats, a cleanly styled instrument panel, standard AM/FM/CD player, and power windows/locks/mirrors are delightful; kind of like receiving a big bouquet of flowers from your guy and it’s not even a special occasion.

If you desire even more goodies, the EX model adds a power sunroof, remote keyless entry and a cargo cover in addition to the already long list of features.

Safety? Fuggedaboudit. There’s more protection here than in P Diddy’s entourage. Six standard airbags, standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Traction Control, and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) are included even in the LX. Show me something else under $16,000 that gives you this much. Good luck trying to find it.
