Snapshot:

New features you'll see in the 2004 Tahoe include a tire pressure monitor, Hydroboost brakes and a right-front passenger seat belt reminder. StabiliTrak, a system that helps improve vehicle stability, is available on many Tahoe models--but not the Z71.

How Much Does it Cost?:

Prices start at $35,600 for the Tahoe LS. The LT model, with more perks, starts at $44,950 for the 4WD model. Pricing for the Z71 package, with offroad capabilities, begins at $43,715.

The Inside Story:

Bench seats are standard for the first and second rows, but bucket seats are available. A third row bench seat is optional and allows an all-bench vehicle to seat nine. Second and third row seating fold to create a flat hauling surface, with a 50/50 split in the third row.

Under the Hood:

The Vortec 5300 V8 engine is standard in Tahoe LT and Z71 models. It offers 295 hp and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. The Vortec 4800 V8 engine, with 285 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque is standard in Tahoe LS models. Mileage: (EPA City/Highway) Vortec 4800 V8 2WD models, 16/19, and in the 4WD models, 15/19. The Vortec 5300 V8 is at 14/18 for 2WD and 4WD models.

Transmission:

Hydra-Matic four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive and Tow/Haul mode.

4WD Systems:

The Autotrac active transfer case is standard on 4WD models. It has four drive modes (2HI, AUTO/4WD, 4HI, 4LO) plus a neutral setting.

Warranty Information:

3 year/36,000 mile comprehensive warranty.

Should You Buy the 2004 Chevy Tahoe?:

The Tahoe is the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, so it's one you should probably investigate, if only to see why other buyers find it so attractive. It's a gas hog, but so are other similarly sized and powered sport utility vehicles.
