Will Jeep Build a new Scrambler?

Late last winter, Jeep issued a press release stating it planned to introduce a new Scrambler-like vehicle sometime during the summer of 2004. The release included a photo of a modified, award-winning Jeep Wrangler that American Expedition Vehicles did for the 2002 SEMA show, with a suggestion that the new production vehicle might be similar.

Not too long afterwards, the press release disappeared from Jeep's media Web site, and efforts to find out if the vehicle is still on target for production have lead to dead ends--no official word. If details for a new Scrambler are released, you'll see them here.

Classic Jeep Scramblers
Jeep offered a Scrambler pickup from 1981 to 1986, building slightly less than 28,000 units during those years. Their popularity may have been slim in the 1980's, but Jeep no doubt hopes that a new Scrambler will appeal to today's small truck and off-road enthusiasts.

What the New Scrambler Might Look Like
If the SEMA vehicle is a clue, you can take the Jeep Wrangler, stretch the frame 24 inches, add a 4-foot bed, section off the 2-seat cab with a custom hardtop and you have the new Wrangler Scrambler.

Sound good? How about 190 horsepower, 4.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, custom tuned suspension, bull bar with winch, 16-inch wheels and tires, and a snorkel intake, Dana 44 front and rear axles, Rock Trac transfer case, electronic differential locker, and four wheel disc brakes borrowed from the Rubicon Wrangler.

If you're a Jeep fan who loves off-roading, but you need a little hauling space, it doesn't get any better than this. Now we just have to wait for Jeep to come through.
