The 2004 GMC Canyon looks pretty impressive, with plenty of power, a spacious interior and cargo space, and other features that drivers will appreciate. It's a first cousin to the Chevy Colorado, and both trucks appear to be headed for widespread popularity among drivers.

Canyon Engine Choices

  • Two engine choices, each with electronic throttle control, variable valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition.

  • Standard 2.8-liter Vortec inline four-cylinder engine; 175-hp and 185 lbs.-ft. of torque.

  • Optional 3.5-liter Vortec inline five cylinder (the first five cylinder in a consumer pickup). 220 hp and 225 lbs.-ft. or torque.

Transmission

  • An all-new five-speed manual transmission.

  • A new transfer case for four-wheel-drive models.

  • A four-speed Hydra-Matic 4L60-E automatic transmission, originally engineered for the much larger GMC Sierra full-size pickup.

Canyon Configurations

  • Two or four-wheel drive.

  • Crew cab, extended cab or regular cab.

  • Standard heavy-duty suspension or high rider off-road.

Canyon Chassis

  • A ladder-type frame underpins Canyon's chassis.

  • Rear-drive models have an independent front suspension and a standard live rear axle.

  • Four-wheel-drive and high rider off-road models feature torsion-bar suspension.

  • Front tubular stabilizer bars are standard on both rear and four-wheel-drive models.

  • Standard rack-and-pinion steering.

  • Four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with tandem power brake boosters, dual-piston disc front brakes with audible wear sensors and 295-mm diameter rear drums.

  • Fifteen-inch aluminum wheels and tires are standard.

Four Wheel Drive

  • With electronic "shift-on-the-fly" capability. The system is accessed from a dash-mounted switch.

  • Full-function traction control is available, and so is a locking differential.

  • Two rear-end ratios are available: the standard 3:42, and an optional 3:73.

Canyon's Interior Features

  • Regular cab with 60/40 bench seats in cloth or vinyl; reclining bucket seats will be available.

  • Four-door extended cab with two forward facing rear seats with under-seat storage and a flat-load floor.

  • Crew cab with front bucket seats in cloth or leather and a 60/50 split; a 60/40 split, flat-folding rear seat will seat three adults.

Additional Canyon Features

  • A driver information center with system readouts.

  • Electrochromic rearview mirror with compass and outside temperature gauge.

  • Optional heated leather bucket seats.

  • An AM/FM stereo with an optional in-dash six-CD changer.

  • Optional OnStar and XM Satellite radio.

Cargo Space

  • 6-foot cargo box on regular and extended cab; 5-foot cargo box on crew cabs.

  • Two tier loading; locking tailgate.

Safety Features

  • Driver and front passenger dual-stage front air bags are standard on all models.

  • Optional head-curtain side air bags.

  • The passenger-side air bag can be disabled on regular-cab models.

  • A reinforced safety cage and side guard door beams to help enhance the safety of the driver and passengers.

  • High-intensity halogen headlamps; optional fog lamps.

  • All-steel body.

  • Three-point lap shoulder belts in all three rear seating positions and the LATCH system.
