New Survey Indicates Consumers Unsure of Hybrids

Thursday July 14, 2005
A new survey compiled by Kelley Blue Book indicates that consumers are skeptical about the service expense and longevity of current gas-electric hybrids. More than fifty percent of consumers surveyed said they have no interest in hybrids or need to know more about them before they would consider a purchase.

Sixty-one percent of the consumers had serious concerns about the expenses related to repairs. Fifty-five percent are wary of a limited battery-pack life. Those two items overshadowed the concerns generated by reports of poor driving performance and failure to meet promised fuel economy. Even though a majority of the consumers were not excited about hybrids, they did acknowledge that hybrids are becoming more important.

The Ford Escape Hybrid has been a popular SUV. It's a little early to determine if the Toyota Highlander Hybrid will be as popular as the automaker's Prius, or if the Lexus 400h will develop a following. Mercury just started selling its Mariner hybrid today. It will be interesting to see how it fares among consumers who are looking for a hybrid vehicle.
