Aftermarket Backup Camera Systems

Saturday November 15, 2008
backup camerasManufacturers didn't offer backup camera systems when my truck was new, but that doesn't mean I can't install one now. Several companies offer aftermarket cameras and monitors for trucks, including Rostra Precision Controls, which recently introduced a system for Silverado and Sierra pickups. A 3.5" monitor slips into the dash (taking the place of a coin holder) and a camera connected to it is mounted to the tailgate. A couple of extra jacks let you plug other electronics into the monitor (like a babycam or DVD player) but for safety, the system switches to the camera as soon as you shift into reverse.

For trucks and SUVs, this is the single most important aftermarket upgrade available. I don’t know the numbers, but I’d imagine that these cameras prevent a lot of backing-up accidents for people who aren’t used to driving such a tall vehicle. One question, though: For the camera itself, do you have to drill a hole into the rear bumper or truck tailgate? Most models that come with that feature have the camera mounted like that.
