2009 Toyota Tacoma Highlights

Tuesday August 5, 2008
toyota tacomaIf this were a normal year I'd say it's almost time for Toyota to show us a new generation of Tacoma trucks, but the current downtrend in truck sales will no doubt affect Toyota's decisions about which way to go with major updates. Tacoma's capabilities got a boost when the current generation entered the market in 2005 with a more powerful V6 engine and cranked up towing abilities. The truck is still available in a wide array of configurations, but the most significant changes to 2009 Tacomas revolve around safety features and interior comfort, with a few exterior tweaks thrown in to give it a slightly different appearance. Prices are up about 5%, a fairly hefty increase.

The safety features (VSC plus 6 airbags) are definitely a draw for me. I do have a question: the Toyota website indicates the same mileage for both the standard and PreRunner 4 cylinder models. However, the PreRunner has a 4.1 rear axle ratio versus a 3.3 for the standard model. Wouldn’t this have an effect on the MPG?

I would expect there to be some difference (better mileage for the standard truck) but looking at Toyota’s specs and the EPA site I see the same thing you did. (They didn’t split it out for 2008 either.)

I am experiencing a serious product safety problem with the braking system of my new 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 purchased in December, 2008. When the brakes are applied, the truck slows to a stop, when the brake pedal remains under pressure, the pedal fades until it reaches floor level. When you release the brake peddle it returns to its normal position.
I have lost confidence in the reliability of the braking system! . Each time I apply the brakes I wonder when they will fail completely or not support the load when stopped on a hill.
