GM Union Workers on Strike
Monday September 24, 2007
I'm flying to Detroit in a few hours -- in time to witness some of the hubbub of a United Auto Workers strike against General Motors, the first auto workers strike since the 70s. The deadline for negotiations was 11 a.m. today, nine days past the end of the actual union contract, and now a total of 73,000 UAW members are walking off their jobs all across the country. Shortly after noon, UAW representatives confirmed the strike, saying they didn't feel GM had treated the negotiations as seriously as they should have. Talks with GM will continue.I'm heading to GM's Milford Proving Ground to drive vehicles in GM's 2008 lineup. I was there a few months ago to compare GM full-size trucks with competitor trucks, and having them all side-by-side was a terrific experience. I could tell you that I'm looking forward to driving more 2008s because it's educational, but the truth is it's just plain fun.
